President, 2005-2006

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

It is hard to believe but the Holiday has been here and gone.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with your families and loved ones.

December was a busy and exiting month for our club.

Lion Alice Hoxie chaired the Partridge in a Pear Tree and she was excited to report she sold out of all coloring books and Farmer Almanac.  Thanks to Lion Pam Sommer, Lion Othella Mays Lion Pat Martin, Lion Marietta Rizzi, Lion Beth Handsman, Lion Jean Hazard and Lion Karen Kelley for their help on this committee

On December 7th Lion Seamus Walsh, Lion Gerry Platania, Lion Darlene Dobson, Lion Marlene Lamendola, Lion Donna Larsen, Lion Pat Martin and I attended the CHRIS Radio Breakfast sponsored by the Lions Club of Danbury.

District Governor Bill Carello joined us at the Ethan Allen for our Christmas Party on December 8th.  Among his goals for 2005-2006 he stressed he wanted clubs to “HAVE FUN”.  His message to us was to make our meetings and events fun and we will attract new members, as well as, retain members we have.  Governor Bill certainly added to the fun we had at the party and we appreciated him taking time from his busy schedule to join us.  Lion Jerry King led a Christmas Carol Sign-along and Lion Alice Hoxie led us in our traditional Twelve Days of Christmas. We had a surprise visit from Santa who gave us a hand with our grab bag.  Thanks to Lion Gerry Platania for arranging with the North Pole to have this special visit.

And finally, Saturday, December 10th Fran Allen did a wonderful job chairing our Annual Green Chimney Christmas Party.   Approximately 22 children enjoyed lunch, a magic show arranged by our own Lion Magic Marty Steinberg, a tour of the fire house and of course a visit from Santa Claus!!!!!   Santa arrived in grand style riding on a fire truck and had gifts for each boy and girl.  Again, thank you Lion Gerry Platania for arranging with the North Pole for this visit also…and Lion Peggy King who was a WONDERUL elf that helped out Santa.  Thank you to all the Lions who came to help out with this special event.

Our Raffle Fund Raiser is coming together.  The application to have the raffle will be submitted the first week of January.  Thank you to Lion Gerry Platania who has made arrangements to have the cost of printing of the tickets donated.   Union Savings Bank will donate funds to help underwrite the cost of prizes and I am now working with Circuit City who I believe will donate the 3rd prize for the raffle. I hope we can start selling tickets by January 29th or the 1st week of February.  With the help of all of our members selling tickets this can be an excellent opportunity for us to have a successful fundraiser

I am attaching a copy of the 2005-2006 Club Committees.  Please check the list to refresh your memory as to what committees you have signed up for.  If there is a committee that you would be interested in being on please call the chairperson to let them know you would like to volunteer.   I would also ask the committee chairperson to review the list and contact the people on your list as you are planning your event.   We have many members (many of them new members) who want to become active in our events.   Please make a point to get them involved in your committee.

Mid-Winter is coming up quickly…February 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Lions Peggy and Gerry King have put together a group of Lions who will compete at the opening night (Friday 2/3) activities with a skit.  I hope you will all come to Mid-Winter and show your support…This is a fun weekend for you to socialize with members from our club, as well as, meet Lions from throughout the state.  Saturday morning there will be excellent seminars to attend to expand you knowledge of lionism, followed with an evening banquet.  I have attached a copy of the registration form for those of you who have not sent it in yet.
