President, 2006-2007

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

A Happy New Year to all.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with their family and friends.

On December 9th our club hosted a holiday party for 36 children from Green Chimney and Good Friends…Lion Fran Allen chaired the event which has been reported by all who attended to be a great success.   Lion Betty Bourne’s company generously donated sweatshirts for the children.  Lion Marty Steinberg arranged a magic show and new Lion Lola Vena played the organ while everyone sang Holiday songs.  Lion Gerry Platania arrived on a fire truck as Santa and Lion Peggy King transformed herself into an ELF to help Santa!!!! The following Lions volunteered their time and efforts to help make this a special party for the children, as well as, a rewarding afternoon for all Lions:  Carrie Matos, Betty Bourne and her daughter, Heather, Marty Steinberg and his wife, Gail, Pat B and Pat L Hoffkins, Lynn and Gerry Platania, Lola Vena, Jerry and Peggy King, John, Kris and Allison Hodge, Alice Hoxie, Othella Mayes, Pam Sommer, Jean Hazard, Karen Kelley, Beth Handsman, Seamus and Michele Walsh, Connie Paist, Marlene Lamedola and Greg Slomba.  So many Lions attended and I apologies if I forgot anyone. The turn out was incredible and the spirit of Lionism lived … Thank you to Fran and her committee for their continued support and dedication to this wonderful day. Lion Fran and Lion Kris Hodge are working together to have pictures from the party displayed at our January 18th meeting for everyone to enjoy.

We then followed that party with our own club’s party on December 14th at Two Steps in Danbury.  District Governor Joe Poirier and his wife Lion Kathy were our guests.  On behalf of the members of our club I had the honor of presenting DG Joe a check for $1,000.00 which represents our contributions to nine Lion projects for the 2006-2007 year.  Lions Jerry and Peggy King led us in a holiday sing along as Lion Lola Vena played the organ. Lion Alice Hoxie could not attend but sent her bells so we could all enjoy the Twelve Days of Christmas.   I know we had all been good Lions all year and we were exited to think Santa would be at our party again this year.  However, Santa was on vacation, surfing in Hawaii, and we didn’t know if he would be there.…But once Santa heard it was for the members of the Candlewood Lions Club he said he had to leave his vacation because he knew we had all been so good all year and worked so hard to help others in our community…He just couldn’t let us down…..of course in the rush to get to us Santa arrived in his shorts and sandals!!!!!  But he did have nice legs!!!!!

On January 18th our evening meeting will be held at the New Fairfield Senior Center.  Lions Jerry and Peggy King have arranged to have a group of Polynesian dancers entertain us and Lion Mark Lyon will also be there to talk about CLERF.  We are going to be planning a “pot luck” buffet and thought it would be fun to have a Polynesian type theme.   We will be asking members to volunteer to bring a dish and then collect a small fee to help cover costs.   If you know a dish you would like to bring please email me at or call me at 775-5222.  As we get closer I will also call members to ask for volunteers to bring a dish.
I would like to thank Lions Jerry and Peggy for bringing this group to us.  It will be a fun evening.

The application for our raffle has been submitted and the sales of tickets should begin at the end of January.  I will be mailing all members tickets to buy or sell so please look for them.  This was a successful fund raiser last year and with the support of all of our members I know it will be again…
