Our club is as strong as our members..... Keep our club strong......
Dear Candlewood Lion Members,
The Lion’s motto is “WE SERVE” and once again the members of the Candlewood Lions Club has proven they truly do serve…In an effort to learn what we can do as a club to get involved with those in need in the New Fairfield Community, a committee, chaired by Lion Marlene Lamendola met with the New Fairfield Social Director, Cindy Williams. Lion Marlene, along with committee members Lion Gerry Platania and I spoke to Cindy about the needs of the community and how we could help. One problem she discussed with us was the needs of a women who was raising her three children (ages 9 to 14) on her own. We were told she was a hard working woman who works everyday but her income does not support the demands of keeping a family of four going. She had been on an assistance program to pay her electric bill. This would have allowed her to pay a low monthly payment. A family member had volunteered to make this payment for her and then stopped without notifying her. Due to this a $400.00 balance is now due and she would not be able to go back on to the assistance program until it has been paid in full. The women went to the social service department for help. The day we met with Cindy she had just learned of this women’s plight and asked if there was anyway we could help.
At our January 19th meeting I brought this issue to our members and asked them to donate what they could and we passed the basket …and of course our members met the challenge. We not only collected the funds to help this women but we also collected $81.00 to put towards school supplies which was another issue Cindy had said they could use help with. Lion Jerry and Peggy King brought a large box of supplies and our own Lion Mascot Allison Hodge donated her chicken nugget money to help these children….Chicken fingers on the club for Allison at our next meeting. What a wonderful thing for her to do….
What a wonderful thing for all members to do……On January 31st Lions Gerry and Lynn Platania and I presented a large box of school supplies and a check in the amount of $400.00 to Cindy at Social Services. It was a privilege for us to represent a club of dedicated and generous members. Hats off to you all.
Cindy White will be speaking at our March morning meeting. Please make an effort to come. Our goal is to continue to help in the community wherever we can and she will be there to discuss areas where our help is needed.
Mid-Winter is coming quickly. Lion Peggy King has been very busy with her group preparing a skit to be performed at the opening night (Friday, 23/06). We look forward to seeing you there to cheer her and her group on.
The Wine Tasting is scheduled for Friday 2/24. Tickets will be sent to all members to buy for themselves or sell to friends, family and co-workers. We need your support to make this a profitable event.
We have received approval from the state to have our raffle. Tickets are being printed this week. Each ticket will be $10.00 and the 1st prize is $500.00 gas card……2nd prize is $300.00 Shaw’s gift certificate and 3rd prize is $200.00 gift certificate to Circuit City. I have been talking to people about our raffle and I have had a great reception from them at the thought of winning a $500.00 gas card. I think we will find these tickets will sell themselves!!!!!!
