Our club is as strong as our members..... Keep our club strong......

President, 2006-2007

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

Well here we are starting a new year and our fundraising events are all coming up over the next three months. The committees are hard at work making plans to make our three major fundraisers to be, not only fun events, but profitable too.  To do this we need to call on all members to take an active part in promoting the events and selling tickets.

The raffle will be our first event and will kick off at the end of January.  The application has been approved and tickets are being printed.  The first prize will be $500.00 Gift Certificate to Marriott Hotels and Resorts, 2nd prize will be $300.00 Gift Certificate to Stop and Shop and 3rd prize is a $200.00 Gift Certificate to Home Depot.   We will be selling our tickets for $5.00 each this year. (A change from $10.00 per ticket last year)    Our thought here was people would be more likely to buy a ticket at $5.00 allowing us to sell to more.  The committee will be contacting members to ask them to volunteer their time to give an hour or two to sell tickets at various businesses in New Fairfield.  What we did last year was team up to sit at a table in front of Shaw’s and Union Savings Bank and sold our tickets.  We also had members sell the tickets at Mid-Winter and had great success there.  The drawing will be on April 21st at Union Savings Bank in New Fairfield.   There is great potential to make revenue with this event if we all get involved.

Our second event is the Wine Tasting which is scheduled for Thursday, March 22nd and we are thrilled that the Boyajian’s have graciously offered to allow us to hold it at the Boyajian Sculpture Barn in New Fairfield. (Our thanks to Lion Bob Gyle for arranging this)  We are looking into doing this in conjunction with Preserve New Fairfield allowing our joint efforts to make this a bigger event then we have in the past.
All members will receive two tickets.  We are asking for your support by buying the tickets for yourself or to sell the tickets to friends, family or co-workers who might enjoy a lovely evening out.  Again, there is the potential to make revenue at this event too. But it will take us all promoting it.

The dance, of course, is our biggest fundraiser of the year.  The committee has some exciting ideas on how to try and top what they did last year.  It will be held on April 28th (Saturday) at Anthony’s Lake Club.  More information will be in the March’s Newsletter.

I think it is important to remind all of us why we work so hard on these events.  In addition to the Lion’s projects we support the board voted at the beginning of the year that 60% of the proceeds we earn will go to the following local, community charities.

·Dreams Come True
·Healing the Children
·Americares Free Clinic
·Puppies Behind Bars
·Ability Beyond Disability
·Good Friends
·Green Chimney
·Ann’s Place

Last year we were able to reach out and help our community.  It is my hope that with the hard work of our members we can exceed what we were able to do last year and touch so many lives.

We are a club to be proud of.  I have heard we are known as a sociable club but we are also known for so much more.  This past September when I attended the USA/Canada Conference I stopped into the Connecticut hospitality suite.  This is where lions from all districts get together and mingle.  When I introduced myself and said I was from the Candlewood Lions Club a fellow lion from another district said, “I have heard of your club.  You have done some wonderful things.”  I cannot tell you the pride I felt representing our club that night.  We are a club to be proud of and I know we will have another successful year as we work together as a team.
So Lions get ready to do what we do best. WE SERVE……….

Congratulations to Lion Alice Hoxie who is a grandmother again.  The Hoxie family welcomed a new baby girl to their family on January 17th.  Lila Summer was 7 lbs 2 oz and 21 inches long.

I had the pleasure of having dinner with Lion Allison Downs this week.  Allison is recuperating at home and doing well.
