Our club is as strong as our members..... Keep our club strong......

Jean Knopf
President, 2005-2006

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

Happy Spring.  It is hard to believe winter is behind us and we now have the warm weather to look forward to.

Everyone had a wonderful time at our March meeting.  Lion Seamus Walsh and Lion Lovie Bourne arranged for Irish dancers to attend our meeting to entertain us and Biscotti’s provided and excellent corn beef and cabbage buffet.  A great time was had by all.  Thank you to Lion Seamus and Lion Lovie for their help in planning this meeting.

On March 10th Lion Pat B Hoffkins, Lion Pat Hoffkins attended International Lions Day at the Union Nations.  They said it was a long day but a wonderful experience…

April will be a busy month for our club.

At our April 6th meeting Past International Director, Scott Storms will be the guest speaker.  I encourage all members who can to attend this meeting.  Our club should show a strong turnout to greet our distinguished guest.  Also, at this meeting members will vote on the officers and board for the 2006-2007 year.  List of nominations are enclosed with this newsletter for your review.

The RAFFLE is going strong.  We passed our halfway mark on March 15th with $1,800.00 in the RAFFLE account.  That is $800.00 profit after purchasing the prizes.  This can be a profitable fund raiser for our club.  We need all members to now really put the push on to sell as many tickets as they can.  Please call me at 203-775-5215, Lion Gerry Platania at 203-830-6958 or Lion Marlene Lamendola at 203-746-7964 to update us as you sell the tickets.  You may also drop off money and stubs to anyone of our Brookfield 1, Commerce, New Fairfield or New Milford (next to Walmart) offices of Union Savings Bank offices. The drawing for the RAFFLE will be held at Shaw’s in New Fairfield on April 29th at 1:00 PM.

Lion Gerry Platania and his committee are hard at work on the “Do You Wanna Dance Party” Fund Raiser. The DJ has a list of great music and is ready to take your requests for an evening of dancing. There will be appetizers and buffet dinner with a cash bar.   We will be doing a Chinese Auction, Silent Auction, and a Live Auction. Lion Marty Steinberg has volunteered to auction a day of sailing on the Hudson River,  Governor Jodi Rell has agreed to allow us to auction lunch for two with her at her Hartford Residence and Mayor Boughton has agreed to auction a lunch for two with him.  This is our BIGGEST fund raiser of the year and we need everyone’s support selling tickets. It will be held on April 22nd and we are enclosing tickets for the event in this Newsletter.   You can call Lion Gerry for additional tickets at 203-830-6958. Please encourage your friends, family and co-workers to join you for a great night of entertainment. We have already sold several full tables and tickets are going fast. Please let Lion Gerry know as you sell tickets so we can keep a count to ensure we do not oversell.  WE ARE CALLING ON ALL MEMBERS………WE NEED YOUR HELP……PLEASE CONTACT LION GERRY TO VOLUNTEER AND MAKE THIS A SUCESSUFL FUND RAISER.

Good Friends, an arm of Green Chimney, will be having their annual fundraiser on Sunday, April 23rd from 7AM to 11AM at the Danbury Fair Mall.  The fundraiser is a race for children and adults.  This will be the 4th year that the Candlewood Lions Club has assisted in this endeavor.   Lion Lovie has volunteered to be the contact person for our club.  Please call her at 203-778-0447 if you would like to join her and Lion Fred that day.

I have just received word that volunteers for ShareFest 2006 are needed (EYE SCREENING).  The organizers of the event have secured the use of Room D171 at Danbury High School to conduct the screening.  Volunteers are needed to help act as translators, guides and helpers for the elderly.   This event will be held on Sunday, May 7th between the hours of 11AM to 4:30 PM with 2 hour shifts.  Lion Allison Downs and I will be volunteering that day.  Please call Lion Allison or me at 775-5215 to volunteer and come join us.

I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Lion Karen Kelly who loss her mother in March.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you Karen.

Congratulations to Lion Carrie Matos who will be a first time grandmother in July...
