Past Club Meetings and Events —

¨Danbury Hospital’s Outpatient Dietitian, Nancy Salem, R.D., C.D.E., was our guest speaker at the 25 March meeting.  Her topic was “Diabetes & Obesity: Understanding Related Health Implications.”  Her presentation was very informative and well received.  She received lots of questions from those present.

¨5 April — The Board meet…Bob Gyle agreed to assume the President’s position for the 2004-2005 Board with the caveat that he got to pick his Secretary.  We readily agreed.  Happily Lion Fred agreed too.  Congratulations Lion Bob & Fred (although it will not be truly official until 22 April)!

¨8 April — Rob Farella celebrated his birthday and we had our morning meeting at American Pie Company.

¨16 April — Lions Fred & Lovie Bourne, Allison Downs, Alice Hoxie, Jean Knopf, Marlene Lamendola, and Seamus Walsh attended the New Milford Lions Club 75th Anniversary in Torrington.  We all had a wonderful time.  Lion Scott Storms was the keynote speaker.  The Waterbury Republican covered the affair.  Out of eight color pictures published, Candlewood Lions were in three of them.

¨17 April — Lion Lovie Bourne, Allison Downs, Jean Knopf, Marlene Lamendola, and Pat Maguire attended Fidelco’s Open House.  We saw the puppies, dogs in training, our brick, walked blindfolded with a guide dog and basically had a good time.

¨18 April — Lions Fran Allan, Fred & Lovie Bourne, & Marty Steinberg and his wife Gail volunteered to work at the Good Friend 11th Annual Tortoise & Hare 5K Race.  We were assigned to the chip distribution/retrieval station.  The day was sunny and warm (the first such day in years for this event).  We were fortunate to have three well mannered, helpful young men (Boy Scouts) from Fairfield Prep and Immaculate High School working with us.

¨19 April — The Major Fundraiser Committee (Lions Fran Allan, Fred & Lovie Bourne, Jerry King (Chair), Othella Mays and Pam Sommer met at Lion Fran’s home to finalize details.

Upcoming Club Meetings and Events —

¨22 April — Evening meeting, Ernie’s Roadhouse, 6:30 PM.  Guest speakers, Kevin Bill “Women & Heart Disease”; Bob Kirsch, Fidelco; Lisa Sloan & our Guide Dog Mascot, Xing.  Additionally, Betty Bourne will be inducted…our newest Lion-to-be.  Lion Bob Gyle will conduct the induction ceremony.

¨27 April — Maj. Fundraiser Comm. meeting.

¨1 May — Glaucoma and Diabetes Related Eye Disease Screenings - Danbury Fair Mall.

¨10 May — Board Meeting…Distrib. of Funds

¨13 May — 7:30 AM, Morning Meeting, American Pie Company.

¨8 May — Major Fundraiser, “Dancin’ Daze” at Anthony’s Lake Club, Danbury, 6:30 PM.

¨20 May — Joint meeting with our sponsor Club, Yalesville - Wallingford Lions Club.  A let-ter is attached explaining about the meeting.

¨27 May — Evening Meeting, Ernie’s Road-house, 6:30 PM.  A representative from CT’s Department of Public Utility Control will speak about our rights to choose an electric supplier.  Lion Fred & I will not be able to attend this meeting and Lion Alice Hoxie will Chair it.  There will also be an induction ceremony of 3-5 new Lions conducted by Lion Bob Gyle.

Club News —

¨Charter Member, Lion Marianne Dahill sold her house and has moved to her new home in Florida.  Lion Marianne will remain our Club member for the balance of the year, and will then transfer to a Club in her area.  I wish to thank former Charter Member, Lion Dick Grant, for assisting me in getting the transfer Club information to Lion Marianne, and for inviting Lion Fred & me to visit.  Oh, Lion Mariann wrote, “Love to All.”

¨Lion Carrie Matos’ son, J.P., underwent an 8-hour open-heart surgery on 8 April.  I visited J.P. and Lion Carrie at Yale-New Haven on 9 April, and presented him with a basketball Easter basket from the Club.  JP is home now and doing well.

¨Lion Elizabeth Steinberg has been invited to join Temple University’s Psychology Honor Society.  Well done Elizabeth!

¨Lion Karen Kelley has a new managerial job in Westchester County.  Congratulations!

¨Lion Pat Maguire has been blessed with another Grandchild.  Best wishes.

¨Lion Gerry Platania has been promoted.  He will assume the position of Branch Manger at Union Savings’ Commerce Plaza Branch.  Way to go Lion Gerry!

¨Lion Jean Knopf wrote:  “Dear Fellow Lion Members, Thank you all for your kind thoughts and the beautiful plant.  I consider myself very lucky to be a part of this great Club.”

¨Lion Gene Arcery is a member of the New Fairfield Lions Club.  I have known him for years.  The Citizen News did a lovely article about his receiving a Melvin Jones Fellow.  I sent him a note, “Gene — Congratulation!  You’re well deserving of a Melvin Jones.  Your service to the community is appreciated.  Kind regards, Lovie.”  In return I received, “Dear Lovie, With every sentiment of regard, your kind words of expression in my becoming a Melvin Jones Fellow is most deeply appreciat-ed.  May we continue to serve the community in the Spirit of Lionism.  Please extend my warmest wishes to your membership.  Gene” 

¨The New Milford Hospital Foundation sent a thank you for our donation in memory of Mrs. Philomena Walsh (Lion Seamus’ mother).

¨The Citizen News gave the Club a break on an ad price resulting in a $67.50 contribution.

¨Every Lion will be receiving a call from a member of the Major Fundraiser Committee to ascertain whether or not you’re coming to our 8 May affair; whether or not you have sold any ads for our booklet; etc.  Fellow Lions we need your help and support!  Thank you.  Please remember that ads must be in-hand to Lion Fred or me by 30 April in order to get the booklet finished, printed, collated and stapled on time.  Every contributor will receive a thank you and booklet.  Thus, please remember to get a contact name and address (for the door prize contributions).

¨Lion Fred and I have resumed our cycling.  If you wish to join us, please call (we do have two extra mountain bikes) and we’re only up to 12 miles thus far.  We generally bike on Sunday at Noon.
