Our club is as strong as our members..... Keep our club strong......

Jean Knopf
President, 2005-2006

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

I can’t believe it but my 1st year as President is coming to an end.  It seems like yesterday that we all gathered at the Ethan Allen Inn for our 10th Year Anniversary Brunch and installation of officers.  I took great pride in serving as President this past year and all that we were able to achieve as a club.

We had a successful fund raising year and we were able to meet, and in some areas, increase our donations to all Lion’s projects. In addition we gave back to our communities in our support to the New Fairfield Social Service needs through food drives to replenish the food pantry, school supplies and aiding a family in need by paying her electric bill; which in turn allowed her to become self-sufficient with a payment program she could afford.  We also supported families with gift baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas Angels at Christmas. Our annual Christmas party for the children of Green Chimney was a fun day with Santa and his Elf making a special appearance.
A new project our club took on this year was our support of Ann’s Place in Danbury.  Though we are a New Fairfield club, Ann’s Place provides aid to all surrounding areas.  In speaking to a representative from Ann’s Place we learned that they will provide support for everything from emotional to financial needs for the cancer victim and their family….To bring it full circle back to our New Fairfield Community, through the Danbury New Times, we had learned of a family from New Fairfield who could greatly benefit from the services Ann’s place offers. (See attached copy of article from News Times)  We are in the process of working with Cindy White, Director of Social Services, to connect this family with a representative from Ann’s Place in the hopes that they will be able to help her pay $10,000.00 in medical bills.

We had several fund raisers this year to support our projects starting in August with Lion Marty's 2nd Annual Brunch and Garden Party and Tour.  October brought the Chili Contest and Road Rally. In December we again had a table at the Partridge in a Pear Tree and sold Farmer Alamance, coloring books and Entertainment Books.    In January we kicked off our 1st Raffle.  Our Wine Tasting was held in February and of course our biggest fund raiser for the year "Do You Wanna Dance Party" followed in April.  This year at our dance we added Chinese, silent and live auctions to make this fund raiser a great success. I would like to thank all those who chaired our events this year and their committee members.  Our year would not have been as successful without the time and effort these lions gave to our club.

I hope you all found the meetings to be fun and interesting.  We had some wonderful guest speakers covering a wide variety of topics.  In October we dressed for Halloween in some very interesting costumes.  December of course was our annual holiday party at the Ethan Allen Inn.  Santa again made an appearance and our District Governor Bill entertained us all with his "dancing" !!  His efforts helped us to rise over $400.00 that evening selling our raffle tickets to benefit the New Fairfield Christmas Angels Project.
The Mid-Winter Conference was held in February and we had an impressive 14 members attend the opening night festivities.  Lions Peggy and Gerry King lead a group of us in a short skit that evening, Lion Bob Gyle arranged for us to have dinner together at a wonderful restaurant in the area and Lion Marty Steinberg sold pins, which he designed, raising over $300.00 to support Low Vision.  In March we celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day with Irish Dancers and a corn beef and cabbage buffet.

Though the goal of every Lions Club is to raise funds to support our Lion Projects and give back to the community I think our club has a wonderful way of balancing the hard work with fun making us a great club to be a member of.

I am pleased to report that we had six new members join our club this year.   Ann Marie Sanchez, who became a member at the club picnic in August, made the decision to move to Spain to live with her daughter and family.  Though we will miss her at our meetings Ann Marie has decided to continue to be a member of the Candlewood Lions Club, becoming our second international member..We wish her well in her new home and look forward to her visits back home.

June 4th is the date for our Installation Brunch at Stony Hill Inn in Bethel.  Please call Lion Allison Downs or me at 775-5222 if you have not done so already to let us know you will be coming...  Please note: there will not be a June, Thursday, morning meeting.  It will be fun for members who only make a morning or only an evening meeting will have the opportunity to gather together.

Welcome to new member Robert Brechter who was inducted at our joint meeting on May 18th with the Yalesville/Wallingford Club.  As you all know the Wallingford Club sponsored us in 1995 to establish our club and it was an honor to share the evening with them as PDG Lion Bob Gyle presented Lion Joyce Wruck a Melvin Jones Award.  Everyone enjoyed an evening of good company and good food at Chuck's Steak House in Danbury.

Again, I would like to say I enjoyed serving as President of our club this year and look forward to the opportunity to serve again in  2006-2007.  Already I have had volunteers stepping up to chair some of our events for next year and we will be looking to all of our members to get involved.  Remember, our club is only as strong as we the members make it. We have a club that all members can take great pride in so come join us next year to make 2006-2007 another successful year for the Candlewood Lions Club.

Enjoy your summer, be safe.
Lion Jean
