Our club is as strong as our members..... Keep our club strong......

Jean Knopf
President, 2005-2006

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

As we begin a new year I would like to again say how proud I am to serve as the President of our club.  I am looking forward to another year of our continued success.

Our Installation Brunch was held on Sunday, June 4th at the Stony Hill Inn in Bethel.  PDG, PCC Alan Daninhirsch and his wife Lion Judy attended and Lion Alan did the honors of installing our officers.  Lion Bob Gyle, along with Lion Alan, presented Lion Marty Steinberg with the Ambassador of Sight Award, Lion Pat Martin with the Knight of the Blind Award and Lions Fred Bourne and Lion Jean Knopf the Melvin Jones Awards. I presented Lion Gerry Platania the Lion of the Year Award for his dedication to our club throughout the year and a special Honor Award to Lions Bob and Norma Gyle for their commitment and dedication to our club and our community.  Congratulations to all recipients.

On June 8th I had the honor of presenting our Community Spirit Awards to two deserving students graduating from New Fairfield High School.  Sitting in the audience I must say how impressed I was with all of these young students and their academic achievements.

June 15th was our last meeting of the 2005-2006 year.  We held it at Biscotti’s and enjoyed the new deck they had just added.  Lions Marlene Lamendola and Lovie Bourne received the Membership Advancement Pin for sponsoring two or more members in 2004-2005 and Lion Allison Downs received the Membership Merlot Award for ending her year (2004-2005) as Membership Chairperson with a plus in membership.   A special thank you and roses were presented to two Lions.  Lion Lynn Platania for her commitment all year to the club in making and donating our beautiful baskets for the raffles and her work with the Wine Tasting and Do You Wanna Dance Fund Raisers and Lion Peggy King for “taming the Lions” and somehow making us look good when we attended the Mid-Winter Conference and performed a skit on opening night.   Lion Rob Farella, our Webmaster, received a special award to thank him for his efforts in developing and maintaining the club’s website.  Over the years Rob has saved the club the expense of paying for this service.  He has developed an interesting and informative site and the club greatly appreciates his time and efforts.  All members should take some time and take a look at our site.

On June 21st The Volunteer Awards Night for Green Chimney/Good Friends was held.  Lion Alice Hoxie, Lion Othella Mayes, Lion Pam Sommer, Lion Marty Steinberg, Lions Rob and Janet Farella and Lion Beth Handsman attended.

In an effort to save the club postage costs I will be emailing our newsletter to members starting with this month’s letter.  If you do not have an email your copy will be mailed to you as normal or if you prefer to get the newsletter in the mail please call me at 775-5222 and I will get you on the list to have letter mailed to you also…

There will be no meeting in July, but plan on the club’s annual picnic on Sunday, August 20th.   It will be held at Lions Bob and Norma’s home.   Lion Marlene is helping me prepare a menu and we will be contacting members with more details.
