Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.  It has been a busy one and the days are going by quickly.

I am sorry but the picnic which was scheduled for Sunday, August 20th had to be canceled.   In its place an “Old Fashion Southern Theme Dinner” will be held on Thursday, August 17th at 6:30 at the New Fairfield Senior Center.  Lion Marlene and I will be calling you with details.  Though it won’t be the usual picnic it will be a time for all of us to gather and spend time together to catch up on how our summer has been.   I would like to thank Lion Marty Steinberg and Lion Pat Hoffkins for extending an invitation to open their homes to us to have the picnic on the 20th but for various reasons the date did not work out.

Lion Carrie Matos is a Grandmother!!!!!! Her daughter, Franchesca had a baby boy, Mason Henry Baird, 7lbs 4 oz. on July 6th.  Everyone is doing fine.

Lion Fran Evans has asked me to let all members know that there will be a bus trip from New Fairfield to the World Trade Center on Sunday, September 24th for a “Tunnel to Towers” walk/run.  The bus will be leaving from Shaw’s parking lot.    If anyone is interested in going they should contact Lion Fran or email John Hodge to get your name on the list for the bus.

Everyone should have received from me by mail or email a list of the committees for the 2006-2007 year.   It is that time of the year again where we do need members to step up and volunteer to work on committees to lead our club to another successful year.  The Chili Contest and the Car Rally will be held in October.  Lion Bob Gyle will be chairing both of these events.  These are our first two fund raiser for the year and work on them will have to begin in September.  A few members have already volunteered to help but more are needed.  They are great events, so come on and join us.

I would like to thank the members who have stepped forward and volunteered to be on the Finance Committee.  They have already met once and are eager to help prepare us for the coming year.    Last year, due to our fund raising efforts, we were able to donate 80% of our project money to Lions projects and 20% to local charities.  Amongst other local charities, we donated $1,000.00 to Ann’s Place in Danbury, a local charity that aids cancer victims in all of our communities.   It is my hope that we can again raise the funds to not only meet our Lions project obligations but the funds to donate to local charities.  With this in mind, I would like to ask all members if they have a local charity that they think we should consider a donation for to submit the name, address and a brief outline of what the organization does to Lion Marlene Lamendola (chairperson for the finance committee) by September 21st.    The finance committee will then put together a list of local charities that our members would like us to support and present this list to the board.  The board will review the list and determine what charity and/or charities we will promote for our fund raising efforts throughout 2006-2007.
