The Board held its first formal meeting on 8 September at Union Savings Bank in New Fairfield. Typically the Board meets on the first Monday of each month, September through June at 6 P.M. All non-Board members are welcome to attend and voice their opinion on any issue; however you have no voting rights. Food is served at the meetings, thus if you plan to attend, let me know in advance.
Our first morning meeting was held on 11 September at the American Pie Company in Sherman. Typically, morning meetings are held at 7:30 A.M., on the second Thursday of each month, September through June. Our guest, Chris Zenk, owner of the Locust Glen Garden Center, Route 37, New Fairfield, spoke to the group about putting their gardens/yards to bed. I have found Locust Glen to be a delightful garden center. Fall is a superior time to plant and reap excellent bargains on bulbs, shrubs and trees. A reading by Lion Lovie and a moment of silence was observed to honor those who died on 11 September 2001.
Orientation to Lionism — was held on Saturday, 13 September at the Asia Pacific Restaurant in Brookfield. There were 20 individuals in attendance, including two who are new to Lions from the Danbury and Milford clubs. Representing the Candlewood Lions were: Lions Fred & Lovie Bourne; Bob Gyle; Jerry & Peggy King; Jean Knopf; Marlene Lamendola; Christine Makell; Pat Martin; Carrie Matos; Pat McGuire; Pam Sommer; and new Lion to-be Seamus Walsh (induction 9/25). The food was delicious, the service excellent, and our presenters, Past District Governors Bob Gyle and Bill Phillips, Lions Anna Valerio and Mark Lyon did an outstanding job explaining what we [Lions] do and why. “An educated Lion is a dedicated Lion,” Lion Bill Phillips. Thank you to our presenters for their most outstanding presentation.
As a tribute to Anna & Joe Valerio who celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on Friday, 12 September, a three-layer Bamboo plant and card on behalf of Candlewood Lions was presented to Lion Anna.
Thanks to Lion Jean Knopf, Membership Director and her team, Lions Donna & Hillery Basriel, for their planning and coordination efforts.
