Our club is as strong as our members..... Keep our club strong......

Jean Knopf
President, 2006-2007

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

Well, October has certainly been a busy month.

On October 15th we held our Road Rally Fund Raiser for the benefit of SightFirst II.  Lions Bob and Norma Gyle mapped a course that led us all through the beautiful countryside to enjoy the fall colors.  Ten cars participated in this event which ended at the New Fairfield Senior Center where refreshments were served.  The following Lions attended…Lions Rob and Janet Farella, Lion Beth Handsman, Lion Alice Hoxie, Lions Jerry and Peggy King, Lion Jean Knopf, Lion Othella Mayes, Lion Tracy Poeti and Lion Pam Sommer.

Our Chili Contest was held on October 21st where over 100 people enjoyed the chili provided by 26 contestants.   Members on board to help were Lion Fred Bourne, Lion Beth Handsman, Lion Kris Hodge, Lion Alice Hoxie, Lion Marlene Lamendola and Lion Othella Mayes.  Club participants included Lion John Hodge, Lion Marty Steinberg and Lion Rob Farella.

Our thanks to Lion Bob Gyle, who chaired both events.

Also, on October 21st Lion Marty Steinberg, Lion Beth Hanson, Lion Janet and Rob Farella and Lion Lovie Bourne gave their time to support the Eye Screening at the Danbury Mall which was sponsored by District 23A.

In addition in October our 1st Vice President, Lion Magic Marty, performed at a magic show and has personally donated to our club $200.00 from his performance to be used as needed by the club.  The club appreciates Marty’s dedication and support to our club and Lion’s projects.

Membership Chair, Lion Beth Handsman, worked closely with me to host our October 26th club meeting.  Our theme was, “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Lions” and our goal was to allow our members to have the opportunity to learn about what it means to be a Lion.  Why we have the fund raisers we do and the reasons we support them, as well as, time to have their questions answered by a panel of knowledgeable Lions.  We were honored to have Lion Linda Maggs, Ridgefield Club, Lion Frank Molinaro, Danbury Club and our own Lion Bob Gyle serve on this panel and share their wealth of knowledge with us all.
Lion Beth had three guests attend with her and Lion Marty had one. Both Lion Beth and Lion Marty continue to work hard to recruit new members and their efforts are appreciated by the club.  My thanks to Lion Beth for her efforts in making our meeting a success.

Welcome to our newest member Lion Dave Stambone who was sponsored by Lion Pam Sommer and installed by Lion Bob Gyle at our October meeting.

Congratulations to Lion Marie Albuquerque who became a grandmother.  Lion Marie and her family welcome a beautiful baby granddaughter to their family, Briana Deolinda Albuquerque, on October 3rd.

As you all know our biggest fund raiser of the year has been our dance in the Spring.  For the last two years we have presented a fifties theme, “Do You Wanna Dance”.  It has been brought to my attention that members feel we should consider changing the theme and/or the format.   All members’ opinions are important.  On November 14th I have scheduled our first dance committee meeting at my office of Union Savings Bank (200 Federal Road, Brookfield – Costco parking lot) with the members of the dance committee.  We will be discussing ideas for our Spring fund raiser.  I would like to invite members to join us.  Be creative and bring your ideas.  As I always say, “Our club is as strong as our members……keep our club strong” get involved and come and join us.
