Jean Knopf
President, 2005-2006

Dear Candlewood Lion Members,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families and loved ones. In light of all that has happened around the world we have so much to be thankful for.  I am enclosing a copy of a letter from Dr. Ashok Mehta, International President.  In this letter Dr. Mehta shares all the good that the efforts of Lions around the world have been able to do for those in need.   We should all take pride in being a Lion and the good our efforts have made to others.  The Lion’s motto is “We Serve” and truly we do….

On Saturday, November 19th, our Third Annual Membership Orientation was held at the Asia Garden Restaurant in Brookfield.  Lion Bob Gyle gave a brief history of our club.  The guest speaker was Carolyn Messier from District 23B. Lion Carolyn is the Council Chair for the State of CT and Past District Governor.  Her talk was very informative and inspirational.  We had a good turn out for this event with the following Lions attending:  Lion Jean Knopf, Lions Gerry and Lynn Platania, Lion Marie Albuquerque, Lion Pat Hoffkins, Lion Pat B. Hoffkins, Lion Cathy Confere, Lion Michelle Walsh, Lion Allison Downs, Lion Rob Farella, Lion Beth Handsman, Lion Bob Gyle, Lion Donna Larsen and Lion Seamus Walsh.   Our thanks to Lion Seamus for the great job he did chairing the event this year.

Our Christmas Party at the Ethan Allen is coming up quickly. Lion Marlene and Lion Greg have been hard at work planning a festive evening for us all to enjoy.  It will be held on Thursday, December 8th and I am very excited that our District Governor, Bill Carello will be our guest that evening.  As we arrive we will be entertained with Christmas music played on the piano by a young New Fairfield student.  He is the student of Lion Greg’s wife, Stephanie.    Lion Alice Hoxie will have her bells with her to lead us in the “Twelve Days of Christmas” and Lions Peggy and Gerry King will lead us through a sing-along of our favorite Christmas songs.
Lion Lynn Platania, Lion Marlene Lamendola and I will be donating special baskets to be raffled that evening.  The proceeds from the raffle will be used to buy gifts for children in New Fairfield who would not receive a visit from Santa otherwise.  The names will be provided by the Christmas Angel Program to us.   Thank you to Lion Donna Larsen for obtaining these names for us.
Invitations were given out at the last meeting or mailed to those who were not at a meeting.  Please remember to call Lion Marlene Lamendola or Lion Greg Slomba at 746-7964 if you will be attending the party and to give her your dinner choice before December. 1st.

Our Raffle Fund Raiser is moving along.   I will be submitting our application for approval to the State of CT in December.   Once we receive approval, tickets will be printed and we plan on kicking off the raffle on January 31st, 2006 with the drawing on April 29th, 2006. This will allow us the opportunity to sell raffle tickets at our Wine Tasting and the Do You Wanna Dance events.  This is a great opportunity for us to raise funds.  I will discuss this in more detail at our January meetings.

Lion Seamus is already at work on our Wine Tasting event for this year.  He will have information to share at our January meeting.

Saturday, December 3rd – Partridge in a Pear Tree Sale – Volunteers are needed.  Lion Alice Hoxie is the chairperson.  Please call Lion Alice to volunteer
Saturday, December 10th -- Green Chimney Christmas Party.   Lion Fran Allen is the Chairperson for this event.
