"Light the Path to Service, Walk the Path with Pride"
President's Pen - June 2002
As a busy and successful year draws to a close, I wish to thank each Candlewood Lion for enthusiastically walking that path in unity. Eight new members joined our club. We warmly welcomed Lions Othella Mayes, Pat Martin, Joan and Ed Smith, Myong-Cha and Chuck Ferrara, Jenn Pryor, and Veronica Siewarga. Lion Nancy Beck became a Candlewood Lion. We named Lion Jean Hazard a Melvin Jones Fellow and Lion Marge Gallo a Knight of the
Blind. We mourned together on September 11 and found a focus in selling Lion Magic
Marty's patriotic pins to benefit the families of our own heroes. Chili Contest II, Octoberfest, and Wine Tasting II were held. We attended the CRIS, Hospice and 100% Club Breakfasts. (After all we began as a breakfast club!) We sold patriotic pins and Lions cookbooks at local craft fairs. We rang those "12 Days of Christmas" bells at our Ethan Allen "Red and Green
Gathering" and added holiday joy to our "adopted family" throughout the year. Our Ground Zero trip to work at the World Trade Center Relief Warehouse was a club highlight. "The Malt Shop Mystery" dinner theater party was a financial and social coup with 150 in 50's attire and $3,500 in the bank to support our charities. International Night with Polynesian dance and
native fare was a colorful delight. We welcomed International Directors Scott Storms and Otto Strobino, District Governor Don Miloscia, Cultural Educator of the Year Dr. Jeff Wiggins, and Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation Chairman Lion Joan Hunt with guide dog Kayla.
Congratulations to Lion Bob Gyle on receiving the International President's Medal "in recognition of your distinguished leadership" at the State Convention.
On a sad note our hearts go out to Lions Bob and Norma on the passing of his mother.
Audrey Bertalovitz received our $500 scholarship, awarded in memory of Firefighter Chris Blackwell. Audrey will study nursing at UMass and be our breakfast guest on June 13th. We thank Lion Rob Farella for the professional web site that he has set up for us at: http://www.candlewoodlions.org Please refer to it often. The President's Pen newsletter will be posted there each month. Once again thank you for lighting the path of service so brilliantly this Lionistic year.
